JOB SUMMARY

Ferry County Health Laboratory is located in a critical access hospital and provides access to laboratory services for outpatients, inpatients, ER department, and clinic. This position is a certified laboratory professional with the ability to perform waived, moderate, and high complexity testing in Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Urinalysis, Coagulation, and Molecular Diagnostics. The desired candidate will be required to perform specimen collections, process and analyze samples in the clinical laboratory, provide quality customer service, and act as a knowledgeable resource for the hospital and community.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

 

  • Performs waived, moderate, and high complexity testing as defined by CLIA (42 CFR 1423 and 1489) - including Blood Bank, Hematology slide reviews/manual differentials, and Urinalysis.
  • Available to work varying shifts, to include weekends, and after-hours call rotation with a maximum 20 minute response time.
  • Qualify for and successfully obtain a Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist certificate through the WA DOH within 90 days of hire.
  • Collects samples: performs phlebotomy, including capillary, venous, and therapeutic phlebotomies; swab collections including nasal, nasopharyngeal, and throat; urine collections for routine testing, drugs of abuse, and chain of custody. Offers patient instructions for proper specimen collection of body fluids if required.
  • Performs all aspects of the job in an environment that optimizes patient safety and respect, and follows standard precautions at all times.
  • Maintains quality results by running standards, controls, and calibrators; verifies equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and advanced troubleshooting; monitors quality control measures and protocols.
  • Processes samples for analysis in the lab or for shipment to the reference lab, evaluates samples for acceptability based on sample and testing requirements, analyzes samples on appropriate equipment, and assesses results for accuracy before releasing to the provider or patient.
  • Responsible for appropriate stewardship of reagents and supplies in the laboratory, reports needed supplies according to procedure, and helps maintain Blood Bank unit inventory.
  • Practices strong attention to detail to reduce the likelihood of medical/health care errors while performing sample testing, while recording and reporting results, or while fulfilling other clerical duties in the laboratory.
  • Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
  • Able to fulfill duties independently while also working professionally with other laboratory members or with other hospital staff.
  • Demonstrates the values of a team concept on a consistent basis, and helps maintain a clean and orderly shared workspace.
  • Maintain certification (if required) through the use of Continuing Education credits (MediaLab subscription provided).
  • Additional tasks and projects may be assigned as needed or desired.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by management.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Meets dress code standards for the department; appearance is neat and clean.
  • Checks hospital email a minimum of once per shift.
  • Completes all mandatory education within given timeframe.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled.
  • Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized punch time system correctly.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner in the community.
  • Attends annual review and department in-services as scheduled.
  • Attends at least 75% of staff meetings; reviews all monthly staff meeting minutes.
  • Actively participates in the department’s quality improvement (QI) activities.
  • Complies with all organizational policies, and employee handbook.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicates the mission, vision and values of the organization as well as the focus of the department.

JOB KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements

 

Current Certification/Licensure as a Medical Lab Technician, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist, or otherwise meeting the educational requirements of CLIA (42 CFR 493 1489) for performing High Complexity Laboratory testing.

 

Training and Experience

 

  • Prior healthcare experience required.
  • Prior laboratory experience performing phlebotomy, waived, moderate complexity, and high complexity testing preferred.
  • On the job phlebotomy training and certification can be provided if needed.

Language Skills

 

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, patients, and the general public.

 

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, rations, and proportions to practical solutions.

 

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
