Example of Duties Note: This position within the Water Resources department in currently in a schedule change testing phase should the schedule be approved, the schedule will remain permanent July 2024. The new test schedule is Monday thought Thursday from 7:00am until 5:00pm with an (1) one hour lunch and Fridays from 700am until 1100am with no lunch. **OPEN UNTIL FILLED**
HIRING RANGE: $40,677 - $46,778 ANNUALLY HOURLY: $19.56 - $22.49 GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK - Performs responsible semiskilled work on a variety of construction, maintenance, and repair projects
- Operates equipment in connection with tasks
- Does related work as required
- Work is performed under regular supervision
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed, the omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)- Performing a variety of semiskilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of public facilities such as streets, water and sewer lines, drainways and sidewalks
- Operates dump trucks, mowers, weed-eaters, chain saws, concrete mixers, trimmers, tractors, hydraulic winches, hoists, boom truck, rear loader and similar equipment
- Loads and hauls materials to and from job sites
- Assists in the installation of pipe in ditch line
- Assists in the installation and repair of catch basins
- Cleans catch basins, manholes and sewer lines
- Assists with the installation and repair of water and sewer lines and related facilities
- Assists in the installation and removal of water meters
- Assists with spreading asphalt to repair potholes and utility cuts in streets
- Assists in cleaning rights-of-way on public streets and property
- Cuts limbs
- Collects limbs
- Mows grass, sprays weeds
- Installs and maintains erosion control
- Assists with traffic control and flagging
- Assists with setting up work zones
- Performs general landscaping and surface restoration at job sites
- Assists with the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment
- Assists with snow removal and ice control
- Performs related tasks as required
Typical Qualifications KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES - General knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned
- Skill in the use of equipment to which assigned
- Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions
- Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions
- Ability to lift heavy articles
- Ability to read and write
- Good physical condition
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associations
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE - High School diploma or GED preferred and minimal experience in the operation of motorized equipment. Those applying without a high school diploma or GED must have 10th grade reading level and ability write complete sentences.
Other Necessary Requirements JOB RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS - This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 70 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects
- Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word
- Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound
- Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arm's length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work
- The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils, and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Possession of or ability to acquire a Class A commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina within six months of employment
- Demonstrated safe driving history
- Possession of or ability to obtain Class C Water Distribution, Wastewater Collections I certifications, Flagger, ITRE and Pesticide certification as needed within one year of employment as applicable for each Division
